Essential Question: How can I help my team understand and support initiatives associated with change?

Over-Arching Goal proposed:

By the end of the program, participants will understand how school initiatives can be successfully implemented so that they can act as advocates on behalf of their peers and students. Additionally, participants will engage in coaching activities to help them understand how to communicate and take meaningful actions that support change.

Program Outcomes:

  • Participants will gain an understanding of Change Management principles.
  • Participants will successfully demonstrate application of the tools and skills learned during the Middle Leadership Development Program.
  • Participants will engage in a professional inquiry process where they formulate practical and relevant questions about a change they must lead.
  • Participants will engage in a performance coaching process to overcome an obstacle impeding their leadership effectiveness.
  • Participants will learn and practice effective communication skills.

Methodology

The coach will guide participants through an inquiry-based process where they will formulate questions that will be investigated during the period of engagement (3 months). This inquiry-based approach will enable participants to construct a customised approach to suit their specific context that addresses a change initiative their team must implement.

Prior to the first coaching session participants will engage in a 8-hour workshop that will present them the fundamental principles in managing change, as well as identifying what successful change looks like. Participants will then form into pairs or triads to formulate a common question related to their professional development. Instructions for drafting this question will be given and the coach will provide feedback to help tune the question. Supplemental readings may also be provided. The first coaching session will provide an opportunity for each group to reflect on their present state and identify the ideal state they would like to move to. The coach will work with the groups to identify an experience that demonstrates movement into that ideal state and the process for achieving it.

In between each coaching session the groups will be required to collect data evidencing their shift that can be reported on in subsequent coaching sessions. During this period the groups are encouraged to interact with the coach. Data will be analyzed and progress assessed in each session. The objective for these sessions will be to identify steps that the groups can take to sustain their performance. Following each session participants will engage in an exit survey process to capture key learnings from the coaching process and identify additional support.
